I see this novel as one of the most important books in American literature, especially twentieth century African American literature. It tells the tale of a young woman named Janie Crawford whose independence and strength allows her to overcome poverty and trials in marriage and love. As Janie Crawford matures through womanhood, three marriages provide dynamic extents of freedom and through these experiences she realizes that fulfillment cannot be found in the love of any man, but in ones definition through self-discovery. Surely, any reader whose passion falls under the roles of women and African Americans in society, will simply fall in love with this story.
